David and Lucile Packard Foundation

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation was created in 1964 and provides grants to nonprofit organizations in the following program areas: Conservation and Science; Population; and Children, Families, and Communities. The Foundation provides national and international grants, and also has a special focus on the Northern California Counties of San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey.

Walter and Elise Haas Fund

In 1952, the Walter and Elise Haas Fund was created, dedicated to the broad humanitarian aims of the founders. The Fund is currently completing a strategic planning process designed to refocus the Fund’s grantmaking guidelines.

Miriam and Peter Haas Fund

The Miriam and Peter Haas Fund (MPHF) supports activities that provide San Francisco’s young (ages 2–5), low-income children and their families with access to high quality early childhood programs that are part of a comprehensive, coordinated system.

Extensive research has shown that before the age of five, children have formed intellectual and behavioral patterns that can dramatically affect their future success. This research also demonstrates that high quality pre-school programs give at-risk children opportunities for economic and social success, a chance to improve their educational performance, and help them become productive members of society. MPHF’s decision to work directly with child care centers to improve quality is rooted in this research.

MPHF recognizes the importance of connecting the work of its direct service grants to the ongoing discussions of public policy and will seek specific opportunities to share and collaborate with organizations to improve early childhood settings.

The Miriam and Peter Haas Fund will also continue trustee-initiated grantmaking to arts, education, public affairs and health and human services organizations. For more information, please contact:

James Irvine Foundation

The mission of The James Irvine Foundation is to expand opportunity for the people of California to participate in a vibrant, successful and inclusive society. The Foundation was established in 1937 by James Irvine, the California pioneer whose 110,000-acre ranch in Southern California was among the largest privately owned land holdings in the State. With assets of $1.2 billion, the Foundation expects to make grants of $51 million in 2003 for the people of California.

Peninsula Community Foundation

Since 1964 the Peninsula Community Foundation has developed resources and programs that serve residents of the San Francisco Peninsula and Silicon Valley. The Foundation stewards 550 charitable funds with more than $478 million in assets, and awards nearly $65 million to 1,500 organizations each year.

UC Davis Extension

Established in 1960, UC Davis Extension is the continuing education branch of UC Davis, offering hundreds of classes, workshops, seminars and specialized training for schools, organizations, individuals and businesses. Classes are designed to fit the lives of working professionals who want quality education with a shorter time commitment than an academic degree demands. UC Davis Extension does not offer degrees, but instead offers a wide variety of cutting-edge professional programs and formats.

San Francisco Foundation

The Civic Engagement Project for Children and Families is a project of the San Francisco Foundation Community Initiative Funds. Founded in 1948, the San Francisco Foundation addresses community needs by supporting innovative ideas and strengthening existing nonprofit organizations that lack sufficient resources or infrastructure. As a regional community foundation serving San Francisco, Marin, Alameda, Contra Costa and San Mateo counties, it focuses in the areas of community health, education, cultural arts, neighborhood revitalization, environmental justice and advocacy for underserved populations.
