An Association of County Children and Families Commissions
Investing in Nutrition and Physical Activity For Children Birth to 5
First 5 County Commissions across California are investing in a wide range of programs and projects aimed at supporting the health and well being of children 0-5. While the goal of these programs are similar — to reduce the incidence of obesity in young children and ensure children's healthy development — the specific approaches are quite diverse. Some counties have implemented comprehensive programs focused on county-wide change at both a policy and individual level, while other counties have made more targeted investments, focusing on specific settings or populations.
First 5 County Commissions vary in the level of investment, the length of time that they have been funding nutrition and physical activity programs, the type of programs and the scale of intervention. Many counties are just getting started and are looking at ways of building on best practices from other First 5 County Commissions, statewide partners and national models. Other counties have been making investments in this area since completing their first strategic plans.
These county profiles describe the type of investment, the target audience, and the expected outcome. For an overview of these investments, please click on the matrix link which shows the investments across counties in seven key areas.
