Go, Glow & Grow
Go, Glow & Grow is a nutrition curriculum for preschoolers 3-4 years old, also produced by the UC Cooperative Extension. It provides opportunities for young children to actively learn about healthy eating and exercise. It encourages healthy eating and physical activity that will have long-term benefits. The lesson activities make the connection between eating healthy foods and the ability to GO,GLOW and GROW. Note: this curriculum replaces the Healthy, Happy Me.
Strengths:
- Clearly organized with well-defined lesson objectives
- Good information for teachers on the approach being used
- Each section is correlated to Desired Results
- Built around the new food pyramid which includes the physical element as part of a healthy body and lifestyle
- Can be easily supplemented with the wide range of free materials available from USDA food stamp program and food pyramid
- Only curriculum reviewed that shows a child with special needs
- Research-based and shown to be effective
- Available in Spanish
- Parent letters and recipes help reinforce the messages at home
Limitations:
- Mainly focused on nutrition with only one lesson that includes physical activity
- May require too much reading for some caregivers with limited reading skills
- May require too many supplies
- Lacks food diversity
- Preschoolers may not grasp concept of go, glow and grow
- May be too focused on teaching the Food Pyramid than on teaching about health
Implementation:
- Could be implemented in a variety of settings including child care and family resource centers
- Could be used by a wide range of educational and professional level teachers and caregivers
- Most of the resources, with the exception of the books, are contained in the curriculum
- Appendix provides information on finding the books (and language availability)
- Curriculum can be downloaded for free from USDA and additional training can be provided through UC Cooperative Extension
- Preparation time required to set up activities and purchase food and supplies
- Training would be helpful
- Easy to implement without outside training
