Let's Get Moving
Let’s Get Moving is a UC Berkeley-designed resource kit that introduces child care providers, professionals, and parents to quick and easy ways to incorporate physical activity into the daily routines of children ages 2-7. The kit highlights ways to promote activity in 5-10 minute intervals throughout the day. Video and activity cards emphasize the importance of being physically active and building lifelong healthy and active habits. This resource kit includes: an 11 minute motivational video on VHS and DVD, 7 activity cards in English and Spanish and 10 copies of a pamphlet for parents and staff.
Strengths:
- Good inspirational tool to motivate parents and caregivers that could be used as a kick-off for implementing any curriculum
- Great use of real preschool teachers as role models in the video
- Does not require additional equipment
- Simple, easy to use without additional training
- Could be used with both parents and children and when working with children with special needs
- More adaptable to younger children
- Inexpensive
- Available in Spanish
Limitations:
- Not a complete curriculum for caregivers
- The kit only covers physical activity without a clear nutrition component
- Needs additional information on how to extend the activities
- There are no suggested adaptations for differences in culture or ability
Implementation:
- Most appropriate for children 2-5
- Can be used in a variety of settings including family child care and parent meeting settings
- Can be used with individuals with varying educational and professional backgrounds and good for those with limited language skills
- Very easy to implement without training
- Should be more clearly described as a motivational tool, with suggestions for when to use the materials
- The activity cards can be downloaded for free
